A rabble-rousing documentary set in 1980s post-punk London, REBEL DYKES reveals the explosion that happened when punk met feminism. The film follows a tight-knit group of friends who met at Greenham Common peace camp and went on to become artists, performers, musicians, and activists in London. A heady mash-up of animation, archive footage and interviews tells the story of a radical scene: squatters, BDSM nightclubs, anti-Thatcher rallies, protests demanding action around AIDS and the fierce ties of chosen families. **** Special Guest Bumpy Favell (all-round legend and producer of King Victoria 2000-2011) will be your MC for the night and will share reflections on being in London at this time! Bumpy explains:
"When I got to London in 1989, I found a squat straight away through a friend - and voila! I was surrounded by dykes. There was a strong dyke culture in London. Housing was quite cheap (or free). London dykes were from all over the world. There were dyke bands in pubs, radical cafes, and BDSM nights and dance parties - all keeping the community connected and active.
The inner London dykes were totally radical politically. They were rebels - and great organisers. They led the Poll Tax marches - and faced extreme police brutality.
This film pays tribute to inner London dykes in the late 80s and 90s who proudly celebrated Dyke sex positivity and revelled in their love of BDSM and public sex acts. Also, they/we were very earnest about everything at the time - like I joined an inspecting your cervix in a circle with speculums and mirrors in a huge squat in Effra Road (Effra River). It was with my squatter house mate Siobhan who produced this film. I didn’t realise we were Rebel Dykes then! I am actually in the film, in the meeting about BDSM near the start, in the crowd. So proud!
