This concert has many things to celebrate. We celebrate The Grainger Wind Symphony's 40th Anniversary 1986 - 2026. Our guest conductor Tracy Videon is researching Australian Women Composers in a celebration of Australian women in music - Mirrie Hill, Katharine Parker and Mona McBurney. Hayden Taylor is an emerging composer studying at the University of Melbourne who has written and orchestrated for wind symphony a new work that arose from his year as Research Fellow at the Grainger Museum. Two significant works by Percy Grainger are being performed. Shane Walterfang, Associate Conductor is conducting the not performed very often Grainger's Hill Song No.2, and Roland Yeung, Music Director and Principal Conductor is conducting Lincolnshire Posy, universally recognized as the cornerstone and "crown jewel" of the wind band repertoire. To conclude our Anniversary Concert, we will invite any past players to form a massed band to play Grainger's 'Irish Tune From County Derry' with audience singing the words of 'Oh Danny Boy' with lyrics by two Englishmen. A pre concert talk will be given by Dr Sarah Kirby of the Grainger Museum. Dr Kirby is the author of a new book "Inventing Percy Grainger: The Construction of Biography on Page, Stage and Screen". This commences at 6.15pm in an adjacent rehearsal hall.
