Gabriel Rockhill - Western or Imperial Marxism
About
Western or Imperial Marxism: An Overview and CritiqueThis presentation defines Western or imperial Marxism as a commodified, domesticated version of Marxism nurtured and promoted by the imperial superstructure of the United States and its allies. It argues that this theoretical tradition emerged from the material conditions of the imperial core, where the intellectual labor aristocracy developed a Marxism severed from anti-colonial struggle, political economy, and the primacy of practice. The talk systematically charts the characteristic features of imperial Marxism—its theoreticism, eclecticism, anti-statism, rebellionism, and categorical rejection of actually existing socialism—while exposing its concrete institutional support through the bourgeois state and the foundations of the ruling class. Ultimately, it contrasts this ideological perversion with genuine anti-imperialist Marxism, demonstrating how the former has functioned as a “red-covered pill” that spreads anti-communism under the guise of radical critique.
