Are you the new Stanley Kowalski?

The Theatre Guild is remounting Butterfly Theatre's recent production of A Streetcar Named Desire (starring Allison Scharber and Leah Lowe).
Due to actor unavailability, we are looking to cast a crucial role:

Stanley Kowalski
Stage age: 30s
Male presenting
Strong stage presence
 

In December of 1947, a play opened that hit Broadway like a freight train and the theatre was never the same again. Butterfly Theatre produced the play in 2025/26 within the confines of a small brewery in Port Adelaide. What that production proved is that a play of this calibre, one that comes with a huge weight of expectation and apparent over-familiarity can be stripped right back and feel as fresh and as dangerous as it did 80 years ago. This same production is being remounted on the Little Theatre stage.

The ghosts of the film loom large over the play: a jazz score, lots of shouting and behaving badly, sweat and women fanning themselves, Marlon Brando mumbling his way through wounded masculinity. Butterfly Theatre took a deep breath and jettisoned all of this baggage to bring the story back to its beating heart: the relationship between two sisters.
The streetcar that the play takes its title from is the key to every aspect of this production. It is fast. It is unapologetic. It is dangerous if crossed. The characters are all moving somewhere, either towards something or running away (sometimes both at the same time).

Stanley is the immoveable object, the king of his castle and everything that Blanche DuBois hates in the world. A war hero and a big fish in the small pond of the French Quarter. Plain speaking and proud, he prizes honestly and reality over fantasies and delusions. His apparent poor upbringing and his status as the child of immigrants are points of vulnerability for him.


About the Production

Rehearsals will begin 10 January and are typically Tues & Thurs evenings and Sundays.
Performances are 12-21 February and include a weekday matinee on Wednesday 17 February.
 

About the Audition

Actors will be auditioned in individual slots. Please allow up to 30 minutes for the audition as they will run almost as a rehearsal – i.e. you will read and workshop with co-actors.
Memorisation is not required for the audition but please familiarise yourself with the script excerpts.

You may be asked to cold read an additional scene.

We are looking for a male presenting actor, stage age 30s, with strong stage presence.

CONTENT: Must be comfortable with intimacy (kissing, touching, fighting) and performing scenes involving sexual assault.

Please arrive a few minutes early to allow yourself time to prepare and account for any parking delays.

You do not need to be associated with Adelaide University to audition.
You do not need to be a member of the Theatre Guild to audition, but if successful, you will need to become a member (minimum cost: $15.)
