Manual Handling Equipment Masterclass

Safe and effective transfers are essential for dignity, participation, and quality of life, yet hoist prescription can be complex and highly contextual. This session helps clinicians strengthen their clinical reasoning when selecting hoist systems across different care settings. Participants will gain practical insights into floor and ceiling hoists, sling selection, and key risk considerations to support safe, sustainable, and person-centred transfer planning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify when a hoist is indicated and select the most appropriate transfer solution.

  • Compare floor and ceiling hoist systems and their clinical applications.

  • Apply clinical reasoning to sling selection and positioning for safe, effective transfers.

  • Recognise the key considerations for ceiling hoist prescription and implementation.

This session is recommended for Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who want to strengthen their confidence and clinical reasoning in prescribing hoist systems to support safe, effective, and person-centred transfers.
