About

Democracy and Misinformation
A panel discussion on the threat of fake news, its impact on public discourse, democracy and the justice system, and how governments, legal practitioners and journalists can meet the challenge, presented by ABC Friends Victoria and Liberty Victoria.

ABC Friends and Liberty Victoria have a long track record defending free speech and editorial independence respectively, contributing to a robust democracy through support for authoritative investigative journalism, fearless independent public broadcasting and advocacy for human rights and law reform.

The two organisations come together to host a discussion of the threat of misinformation and fake news, an issue that now sits at the heart of much of our respective advocacy work.
Both organisations also celebrate significant milestones this year.
- Liberty Victoria, founded as the Victorian Council for Civil Liberties, celebrates 90 years of activism on civil liberties, human rights and the rule of law.
- ABC Friends Victoria celebrates 50 years of advocacy for the ABC as a cornerstone institution of Australian democracy.
