Concert 6 2026 Together In Music: Breaking The Boundaries

About
Melbourne’s Grainger Wind Symphony presents its sixth and second last concert of 2026 Breaking The Boundaries — a joyful celebration of artistry, community, and shared musicianship. Under the leadership of Associate Conductor Shane Walterfang.
The concert is another illustration of the diversity in programming and performance. This concert features individual players of the wind symphony as they present gems of the genre of small group compositions. You will hear up close how individual instruments combine together one to a part to express an intimacy and colour.
The feature work blends the wind symphony genre with a five member rock group made up of vocals, guitar, organ, bass guitar and drums. Jon Lord, known as the genius behind the hard rock band Deep Purple rose to fame in the 1970s with classic hits such as Smoke on the Water and Purple Strangers. Jon Lord was innovative with driving his Hammond C3 Organ through Marshall amplifiers and demonstrating the organ is played differently to a piano. Roger Glover would later describe Lord as a true "Zen-archer soloist", someone whose best keyboard improvisation often came at the first attempt.
In early 1973 Lord stated: "We're as valid as anything by Beethoven." As a composer, Lord continued his classical aspirations alongside his Deep Purple career.
Lord-composed Concerto For Group and Orchestra was one of rock's earliest attempts to fuse two distinct musical idioms. It was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall on 24 September 1969. Concerto gave Deep Purple their first highly publicised taste of mainstream fame and gave Lord the confidence to believe that his experiment and his compositional skill had a future, as well as giving Lord the opportunity to work with established classical figures, such as conductor Sir Malcolm Arnold, himself a composer. Lord went on to compose other works such as the album Sarabande, and the project Paice, Ashton Lord.
The Grainger Wind Symphony's (Rock) Group is made up of Erin Wallach - vocals, Luke Kelty guitar, Charlotte Pierce organ, Glen Baddeley bass guitar and Shane Hunt drums with Shane Walterfang associate conductor leading The Grainger Wind Symphony.
We recommend that you bring a cushion to sit on as the orange stadium seats a uncomfortable.
