MATTUTINO: Julie Adam - The Bartók Connection
Julie Adam, piano
Béla Bartók (1881 – 1945) was one of the 20th century’s greatest composers, his significance continuing to grow throughout the world even today. Apart from being an extraordinary pianist and teacher, he took the collecting of folk song to a new level, ultimately assimilating the various folk music styles into his own compositions. His many friends and colleagues esteemed him greatly as a human being of the utmost high moral principles. Some of these friends and colleagues are featured in this recital.

Julie Adam was born in Hungary where she received her early musical training before moving to Australia, where, from the age of 11, she played in studio broadcasts, public recitals and concerti for the Australian Broadcasting Commission as well as chamber music performances for Musica Viva.
Scholarships led Julie to study in Europe, where she made London her base, and was frequently to be heard at the Wigmore Hall and on the South Bank. She broadcast regularly as a soloist for BBC Radio including live ‘Concert Hall’ recitals. She also worked extensively as chamber musician and accompanist.
Since her return to Australia, Julie Adam has continued her musical activities, broadcasting for the ABC, giving recitals and concerto performances, taking part in chamber music, teaching extensively, adjudicating eisteddfods and coaching young musicians.
In 2024 she returned to Hungary to record a CD of piano works by Bartók called “Land of my Early Childhood”. Her more recent project – The Bartók Connection - is featured in this recital.
