Managing nitrogen and carbon over the long term

Inspect one of Australia's longest-running cropping systems experiments and hear from leading scientists on how rotations, legumes and fertiliser nitrogen influence soil carbon and nitrogen supply and what are the implications for Wimmera farming systems.
Join Agriculture Victoria research scientists Dr Katherine Dunsford and Dr Kamal Adhikari and Prof. Roger Armstrong from La Trobe University as they share insights from the Agriculture Victoria's long-term crop rotation and tillage trial (SCRIME, est. 1998) at Longerenong.
Hear how crop, pasture and green manuring rotations and tillage systems have influenced soil carbon and nitrogen stocks, mineral nitrogen supply and crop productivity over the past 27 years - and what these findings mean for Wimmera farming systems today.
Recent findings from the national Nitrogen Use Efficiency project will provide growers with information about how much of their crop N is derived from fertiliser versus soil reserves, the value of this fertiliser N to subsequent crops and what is the potential for losses of fertiliser nitrogen in Wimmera cropping systems.
After talk please stay for morning tea and an optional walk through of the SCRIME trial.
