From Egg to Adult: The Fascinating Journey of Life

Every living organism follows a unique and extraordinary journey—from conception to growth, reproduction, and eventually, death. This dynamic incursion explores the remarkable diversity of animal life cycles and reproductive strategies, giving kids an exciting and up-close look at how species have adapted to survive, thrive, and evolve in Australia’s often harsh and changing environments.

This Biology incursion dives deep into the science of life, revealing the incredible ways animals develop and pass on their genes, and the critical importance of adaptation, resilience, and genetic diversity in the natural world.

Using live native Australian animals and expert-led demonstrations, families will examine the life stages of a range of vertebrate and invertebrate species—from insects that undergo metamorphosis, to mammals with complex reproductive systems. The presentation draws real connections between scientific theory and real-world biology through interactive animal encounters and visual comparisons across animal classes.

Key Topics Explored:

  • Life Cycles of Invertebrates and Vertebrates
    • Metamorphosis in insects and amphibians
    • Direct development in reptiles and mammals
  • Reproductive Strategies
    • Viviparous (live birth), oviparous (egg-laying), and ovoviviparous species
    • Marsupials vs. placental mammals
    • Internal and external fertilisation
  • Vulnerability in Different Life Stages
    • Predator-prey dynamics
    • Survival adaptations and parental investment
  • Longevity & Reproductive Success
    • Animals with short vs. long lifespans
    • Trade-offs between reproduction and survival
