‘Mentalizing: Understanding Yourself and Others When Thoughts and Feelings Get in the Way’
Join us for an Evening of Tea and Trivia for a Cause with International Expert, Prof Anthony Bateman, the developer of Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
Wednesday 25th November 6.00-9.30pm
Box Hill, Victoria

🗣️ Have you ever found yourself in an argument and wondered how it began?
Have you felt misunderstood by someone you expected to understand you?
Or perhaps you have had the opposite experience: being told you do not understand, even when you believe you do.
These are common human experiences. They often arise when mentalizing becomes difficult - when we struggle to make sense of our own mind in relation to the minds of others. Most of the time, we can set misunderstandings aside, or even understand them more clearly, and move on. At other times, however, this becomes much harder. We may feel trapped, misunderstood, and unable to trust the people closest to us. Emotions intensify, blame takes over, and our thoughts become confused. This painful tangle of misunderstandings is often most intense with the people we love. When attachments are strong, the heart can overwhelm the head, making it hard to regain balance. The result can be deep distress and a damaging loss of trust. People commonly diagnosed with borderline personality disorder often live with this ongoing struggle between head, mind, and heart - and so, understandably, do those closest to them.
In this talk, Anthony will explore why maintaining our own capacity to mentalize is so important in close relationships. We will also consider how strengthening our own mentalizing can help someone we love to regain or maintain theirs during times of stress.
While Prof Anthony Bateman explores how we understand ourselves and others, our IQ vs EQ Trivia Challenge will run throughout the evening. Expect plenty of laughs, friendly rivalry and surprising discoveries as teams compete to determine whether IQ or emotional intelligence wins the day.
