About
From 'Don't get Sued' to 'Standing your Ground'
This workshop explores 'honestly held opinion' and 'public interest' defences to defamation charges as a prelude to exploring some of the technicalities of reporting on court proceedings. More than not just defaming either party, reporting on court proceedings requires some knowledge of the law, not just to understand what is happening inside the court, but also because of specific legal restrictions including suppression orders, legislative restrictions, and sub judice contempt.
Although some aspects of defamation law were explored in a previous workshop, you will not need to have any prior knowledge of this area in order to benefit from this workshop!
Presenter
Dr Laurel Mackenzie is an oral historian and law graduate whose passion for connecting storytelling with social justice runs through her practice, from her work as a community radio announcer with 3CR to lecturing in sociology and policy at leading Australian universities.
