Blockchain & Sustainability: Uses in the Built Environment

About

How can blockchain technology improve transparency, accountability and sustainability in the construction industry? Join the ACA and Adelaide University's Dr Navodana Rodrigo for this CPD webinar exploring emerging applications of blockchain technology in the built environment, drawing on current research, pilot projects and real-world examples.

Blockchain technology has gained significant scholarly and industrial attention as a disruptive digital innovation with the potential to support sustainable development. Due to blockchain’s inherent features that enhance security, trust, transparency, traceability and accountability, it can contribute towards a more sustainable built environment eco-system. This presentation focuses on the use cases of blockchain across diverse sustainability domains, including renewable energy systems, carbon estimating and trading, waste management and circular economy practices. Drawing on contemporary research and real-world case studies, Navodana will explore the opportunities and limitations of adopting blockchain technology, and its potential contribution to more sustainable outcomes across the building and construction industry.

The session will examine:

  • Carbon estimating: How blockchain can support more transparent and reliable carbon assessment, including a demonstration of a research-developed system.
  • Circular economy: Applications of blockchain to improve material traceability, resource recovery, waste management and circular economy practices.
  • Solar waste trading: Emerging research into the use of blockchain to support the tracking and trading of solar waste materials.

Join us to gain insights into emerging digital technologies and their potential to support sustainability in practice.

This presentation is a collaboration with Arch_Manu: ARC Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing ITTC.
