Prof. Catharine Coleborne will be speaking on: 'Remembering poliomyelitis: what memoir research can add to the story of polio in Australia'. Research about the historical experience of polio in Australia can expand our understanding of the significance of the illness in the past, and its impact on families and communities. Oral histories offer valuable detail about polio as an illness that shaped peoples' lives over time, and can be usefully contextualised by written memoirs and reflections about polio by survivors who have told their stories in other forms. This presentation will offer an update on the research project being undertaken at the University of Newcastle and add new elements to the conversation based on memories, recollections and reflections.
