About
The Pottery Apprentice Program is an eight-week pottery course for young people aged 12-18. It provides a welcoming, inclusive and supportive space where teens can unwind after the stress of school, connect with other young creatives and explore their own artistic style.
Working with clay can offer a calming, hands-on way to slow down, focus and regulate the nervous system. Students are encouraged to experiment, follow their interests and build confidence in their ideas rather than producing identical work. Techniques will be demonstrated, but there is plenty of scope for individual creative expression.
Students will make, glaze and fire a range of functional and sculptural pieces while developing their technical skills and understanding of the ceramics process.
The curriculum includes:
• Throwing and trimming pots on the pottery wheel
• Hand-building with coils, pinch pots and slabs
• Sculpture
• Exploring glazes and decorative techniques
• Studio safety, equipment care and maintenance
Classes run weekly on Fridays for eight weeks, beginning 16 October, from 3.45-5.45 pm. The final 10 minutes of each class are used to clean and care for our tools, equipment and shared studio space.
Make-up lessons are not available. Please read the terms and conditions before booking. Suitable for ages 12-18. Course facilitator: local artist and ceramicist Pat Graham.
*Our studio is LGBTQIA+ and neurodiversity affirming. We welcome young people of all identities, communication styles and ways of engaging, and aim to create a space where everyone feels safe to be themselves.
