FOUR DAYS. FIVE ADVENTURES. ONE BIG BIODIVERSITY COUNT.
The Great Southern BioBlitz is a spring snapshot of life across the entire Southern Hemisphere. Over four days, people across Australia, New Zealand, South America and southern Africa record as much biodiversity as they can find and upload their observations to iNaturalist — building a single, shared picture of life across the southern hemisphere.
Green Heroes is joining the global effort with a series of adventures exploring biodiversity both underwater at Cook Island Aquatic Reserve and on land across the Fingal Head Peninsula.
EXPLORE FINGAL HEAD
Join us for a fun, fast-paced land-based biodiversity hunt through Fingal Head.
We’ll meet at Salt & Stone Cafe, Fingal Head at 9:00am before splitting into small teams. Each team will be allocated a zone to explore, with the mission of finding and recording as much biodiversity as possible in just 45 minutes.
Look closely and you might discover birds, insects, spiders, reptiles, fungi, flowers, trees, marine life and all the little things that are easy to walk straight past!
No specialist knowledge is required — just curiosity and a willingness to look closely. Green Heroes will help with identification and recording observations through iNaturalist.
THEN THE FUN CONTINUES
After 45 minutes, we'll regroup at Salt & Stone Cafe to share our discoveries, upload our sightings and compare what each team found.
We'll have time to refresh, swap stories and celebrate our discoveries with some fun BioBlitz awards — because a little friendly competition makes biodiversity even more fun!
🐞 BIOBLITZ BINGO FOR KIDS
Bringing younger children along? We've got them covered!
We'll provide a fun Biodiversity Bingo / Hunt card with things to look for during the survey. It's a great way for kids and families to slow down, explore their surroundings and discover just how much life is hiding around Fingal Head.
Whether you're a seasoned citizen scientist or have never used iNaturalist before, come along, explore, discover and help us put Fingal Head on the biodiversity map.
