About
Voices of Vienna is the Central Coast Philharmonia’s 3rd concert for 2026 and brings together two miniature Masses by two of Vienna’s most beloved composers – Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert.
Performed with choir, string quartet and organ, these charming and deeply expressive works reveal the elegance, warmth and vitality of Vienna. Under the creative direction of Conductor and Musical Director Patrick Brennan, the program moves effortlessly between intimate beauty, lyrical tenderness and glorious celebration.
At the heart of the concert is Haydn’s Little Organ Mass (Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo), written for the Brothers Hospitallers honouring their patron saint St John of God. Outstanding Soprano soloist Izabelle Zammit, winner of the 2026 Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Sydney International Song Prize, promises to be a true highlight in the Benedictus solo movement accompanied by organ obligato – a part Haydn himself is believed to have performed.
Alongside Haydn comes Schubert’s Mass in G major, a remarkable work composed when Schubert was just 18 years old – reportedly in only six days. Written for his family’s parish church in Vienna, this tuneful and lyrical Mass combines soprano, tenor and bass soloists with choir, string quartet and organ. Its gentle, intimate character builds towards the exuberant and triumphant Gloria, showcasing the astonishing maturity of Schubert’s youthful genius.
Audiences will also be treated to a stunning and joyful organ solo by Gerard Nicholls, before the concert reaches its finale – with the audience invited to join the choir in singing Handel’s magnificent and universally loved “Hallelujah” Chorus.
Voices of Vienna is a shared musical experience – intimate, joyful and celebratory – and what better way to welcome Christmas 2026!!!
