In this bold and playful reimagining, Shakespeare’s timeless tale of forbidden love is brought to life through the vibrant physicality, masks, comedy and larger-than-life characters of Commedia dell’Arte. The Montagues and Capulets become rival theatrical households, while Romeo and Juliet take their place among the young Innamorati — passionate lovers determined to overcome the ridiculous obstacles standing between them.
With scheming parents, meddling servants, foolish authority figures and a generous dose of theatrical chaos, our ensemble explores the comic possibilities of one of Shakespeare’s most familiar stories without losing sight of its darker heart. Beneath the laughter lies a powerful story of love, family, conflict and the devastating consequences of a world in which young people are denied the freedom to determine their own futures.
Building on Sheoak Productions’ previous Shakespearean adaptations, this production combines Shakespeare’s original language with the spontaneity, physical comedy and irreverence of Commedia dell’Arte. Familiar characters are reimagined through recognisable Commedia archetypes, creating a fast-paced and accessible production that celebrates the theatricality of Shakespeare while offering audiences a fresh perspective on this iconic tragedy.
Romeo and Juliet has been told countless times, but through the lens of Commedia dell’Arte, audiences are invited to see the story — and its characters — anew. Expect masks, mayhem, music, physical comedy and, ultimately, a love story that reminds us just how dangerous hatred can be.
