The Conference Against Nuclear and Militarism (CANAM) is being organised by a collective of people from different walks of life who have come together through organising against militarism and nuclear expansion. The inaugural CANAM will take place from October 30th to November 1st of this year. The conference will take place in Narrm at Schoolhouse Studios, including an evening opening event and two days of workshops and panels.
CANAM seeks to foster collaboration between two pillars of anti-colonial struggle on the continent of so-called Australia. First Nations voices, sovereignty and self-determination have been central to the long struggle against nuclear on this continent, and continue to be critical in this struggle and the fight against militarism today. Today so-called Australia is embedded in global supply chains supporting and profiting from the military industrial complex through uranium extraction, weapons testing, weapons manufacturing, military training, providing (stolen) ground for US intelligence bases and of course the multi-billion dollar AUKUS agreement.
We hope to bring together those who have led these struggles against nuclear and militarism as well as those who are new to the movement. In bringing us all together the goal is to educate, strategise and organise. By learning from each other, we hope to cross-pollinate ideas and learnings between movements, so that in understanding the success of different strategies, both struggles can be strengthened together. We also wish to use this opportunity to deepen our movements' analysis of AUKUS as a focal point of the struggles against both nuclear and militarism, and weave anti-AUKUS organising into all of our work.
