About

Like a Book Club... but with hands-on HASS and creative projects!
5-week program for girls aged 10-13 | Fridays, 23 October–20 November
10:15 am–12:30 pm

Using an engaging historical novel as our starting point, each 2 hour 15 minute session will take girls beyond the pages to explore the real history behind the story.

Girls will work with authentic historical sources, investigate different perspectives, explore media bias and persuasive language, learn to reference and use sources appropriately, and explore vocabulary and literary techniques — with hands-on creative projects woven throughout.

There’ll be plenty of lively discussion, questions and opportunities to share ideas, with girls also learning to use evidence to develop an argument, consider different viewpoints and build towards a fun team debate.

Pilot pricing: $30 per week | $150 for the full 5-week program

Just 6 places available

Program Details

This is a 5-week pilot program, with bookings covering the full 5 weeks. Groups are intentionally kept small, with only 6 places available.

The $150 program fee includes all activity and creative materials, as well as each girl’s own scrapbook/workbook to use throughout the program.

Books

Girls will require their own copy of Our Australian Girl: The Rose Stories by Sherryl Clark. During the 5-week program we will work through Book 1: Meet Rose before moving into Book 2: Rose On Wheels, so girls will need access to both books.

As we will be working directly with the text during sessions — exploring vocabulary, comprehension and literary techniques — a physical or digital copy is recommended rather than an audiobook for this program. Audiobooks can, of course, be used alongside the books if helpful.

A note about reading & homework

This group will move through the story at a faster pace than the younger group, with some chapters read together during our sessions and others assigned for reading at home. Girls can expect to read approximately 3–4 chapters each week in total.

Like a book club, keeping up with the reading between sessions is an important part of the experience. It means our time together can be spent discussing the story, investigating the history behind it, working with sources and building on ideas from the chapters everyone has read. Other than this reading, there will be no set homework.

Please resist the temptation to read ahead! Our weekly discussions, activities and predictions are intentionally timed to unfold alongside the story, so keeping everyone at roughly the same point helps preserve some of the fun and mystery.

Communication

A private WhatsApp group will be created for families booked into this group, making communication easy throughout the 5 weeks. I’ll use this to share weekly updates, including what we’ve covered, reading for the following week and any helpful reminders. Families can also use the group to let me know about absences, ask questions or get in touch between sessions.

Our Group Culture

I want this to be a warm, welcoming space where girls feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, being creative and getting to know one another.

Girls are expected to treat each other with kindness and respect, listen when others are speaking and help create an environment where everyone feels included and able to participate.

There’s no expectation to be outgoing or confident — girls are welcome to take their time settling in and participate in ways that feel comfortable for them.

If any concerns arise that are affecting the group experience, I’ll always aim to work collaboratively with families to find a supportive way forward.

What to Bring

Girls should bring their novel, a water bottle and a nut-free snack each week. All other materials will be provided.

Parents & Drop-off

Parents are welcome to drop and leave or remain at the venue while the group is in progress. To help the girls settle into the group and participate independently, the learning space itself will be just for the girls.

The exact Karrinyup address will be provided to booked families prior to the first session.

Missed Sessions

As places are reserved for the full 5-week program, missed sessions are non-refundable. If your child is unable to attend, please let me know via our class WhatsApp group. I’ll make sure you know what we covered and what reading to complete before the following week.
