A School of Her Own: The Founding of Queenwood in 1920s

In 1925, Grace Lawrance and Beatrice Rennie founded Queenwood in a house on Mandalong Road, Mosman, driven by a bold vision for the education of girls. This presentation places their story within a broader history of social change, tracing the antecedents of progressive girls’ education back to the mid-Victorian era and the reformation of girls’ secondary education at the turn of the century. Set against the aftermath of the First World War, the changing social and political landscape of the 1920s, and the rapid growth of Mosman and Sydney, Queenwood’s founding reveals a fascinating intersection between local history, broader social currents, and the remarkable story of its two inimitable founders.
