BSF2026: Emerging Voices Concert with Samuel Long (SOLD OUT)

Emerging Voices: Samuel Long
The Emerging Voices concert shines a spotlight on an exceptional young saxophonist, providing an emerging artist with the opportunity to bring a fully realised professional recital to the Brisbane community. This year’s Emerging Voices artist is Samuel Long, a second-year Bachelor of Music student at The University of Queensland and one of the exciting young saxophonists emerging from Brisbane’s music scene.

For this performance, Samuel takes on an extraordinary challenge: Jenni Watson’s Adjusting Parameters, a 74-minute work for alto saxophone and backing track that pushes the instrument across a remarkable range of styles, sounds and techniques. The work demands virtuosic technical control, including altissimo playing, intricate fingerwork, false fingerings and exceptional breath control.

Originally commissioned through a worldwide consortium of 41 players led by Erin Royer, Adjusting Parameters is a substantial work that showcases the extraordinary possibilities of the saxophone as a solo instrument.
Samuel’s performance marks the first presentation of the complete Adjusting Parameters in Brisbane—a marathon of virtuosic saxophone playing and an unmissable experience for anyone passionate about the instrument, contemporary music and the next generation of Australian saxophonists.
