Literary journal Splinter launches its fifth issue with live readings from Hasib Hourani, Emily Thornton, and Andrew Roff, plus a Q&A led by editor Farrin Foster.

Created in Tarntanya (Adelaide), Splinter features new poetry, essays, and fiction by writers from across Australia and the world. Its fifth issue (loosely) prods at what progress means in the polycrisis era through writing that is sharp, insightful, and often funny (while still being imbued with an appropriate atmosphere of catastrophe).

Farrin Foster is a writer, editor, and film-maker. She is the founding editor of Splinter literary journal and was previously the editor of CityMag and City Standard. Farrin has been published widely, including in mastheads like Meanjin, The Guardian, The Big Issue, and Kill Your Darlings.

Hasib Hourani lives and works on unceded Gadigal Country. His debut book of poetry, rock flight, was released in 2024 with Giramondo and his debut novel, Malachite, will be released in April 2027 with Penguin Random House.

Andrew Roff is a writer living on the unceded Country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. His short fiction has appeared widely, and he is a former winner of the Peter Carey Short Story Award, the Griffith Review Emerging Voices Competition, and the Margaret River Press Short Story Competition. His debut story collection, The Teeth of a Slow Machine, was published in 2022. Here Are My Demands, released in 2025 through Wakefield Press, is his first novel.

Emily Thornton is a Birrbay-Dunghutti writer, researcher, and musician whose work explores storytelling, cultural continuity, and the intersections of memory, place, and identity. She is currently based on unceded Gadigal land and works across creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and music practice.
