Merri-bek Darebin District Survival Camp
Location
About
The purpose of this camp is to give Scouts an opportunity to practise practical survival, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills in a realistic but controlled environment.
Scouts will arrive equipped as though they were undertaking a normal two-night hiking camp. They should bring their usual hiking and camping equipment, including tent, sleeping gear, clothing, cooking equipment, food and water.
During the camp, however, a series of simulated equipment failures and emergencies will require them to adapt what they have rather than relying upon their equipment working perfectly.
The emphasis is not on making Scouts uncomfortable unnecessarily, but on teaching them how to:
- improvise when equipment fails;
- determine priorities;
- work effectively as a patrol;
- use limited resources;
- care for an injured or vulnerable member of the patrol;
- remain calm and develop a plan when something goes wrong.
