Borrowed Baroque - Salut! Baroque (Canberra)

About
Demands were numerous for composers in the 17th century. Commemorative music had to be written for births, deaths and marriages as well as vanity, battles and even surgery. The pressure to constantly produce new compositions led some composers to take short cuts through borrowing, reworking or reusing their own earlier works. Bach borrowed for study and teaching purposes; Telemann borrowed out of curiosity and a love of learning. Handel was a life-long borrower from other composers as well as himself. His conceit was in believing that his borrowing from others always improved on the original. With his string of ‘hits’ still celebrated, history may have proved him correct!
