About
Cultural life throughout 17th century Europe was transformed by the joyous and unifying language of music. A strikingly different soundworld emerged as composers embraced diversity and innovation, all eager to remain at the forefront of creativity. Musical boundaries loosened, becoming more fluid than geographic boundaries. Arts-loving nobility competed to create centres of artistic excellence, poaching the most popular musicians. Italian musicians were especially in demand, and our adoption of Italian as a musical language is testament to their significant influence. Audiences were captivated by this flourishing multicultural melting pot, which provided a welcoming environment for inventive composers.
