Long before social media, some musicians achieved extraordinary levels of fame. As influencers of the day, Corelli, Vivaldi, Tartini and Telemann all capitalised on audiences hungry to hear the latest celebrity. With concerts moving to coffee houses, taverns and private palaces, composers were free to explore new styles, beyond the confines of the church and the court. Musicians became surprisingly well connected through travel and the proliferation of music publications. Letters and pamphlets were the contemporary blog posts where artists exchanged news, ideas and gossip. Canny composers catered for their growing numbers of followers with a steady supply of new works and ‘how-to’ treatises, bringing fame and fortune to some.
