About

Brisbane saxophonist Brad McCarthy pays tribute to Cannonball Adderley with his show Cannon Fodder, bringing together some of the city’s finest young jazz musicians for an energetic celebration of his music. Expect swinging grooves, soulful phrasing and plenty of foot-tapping classics from the Cannonball Quintet.

A multi-instrumentalist best known for his alto saxophone, Cannonball Adderley was one of the defining voices of the hard-bop era, celebrated for his work with Miles Davis and his own legendary quintet- with more than 30 albums to his credit.

McCarthy has been a vibrant voice in Australian jazz for over 20 years. He has performed extensively around Australia and at festivals including the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, Manly Jazz Festival and Noosa Jazz Festival.

Inspired by alto saxophone legends including Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Garrett, McCarthy combines the hard-bop tradition with the energy of contemporary jazz. He has shared the stage with leading Australian artists including James Morrison, Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow and Jamie Oehlers.

Known for high-energy performances, tight ensemble interplay and electrifying improvisation, McCarthy and his quintet bring Adderley’s music to life in the intimate setting of Ruby Jazz Club.
