Roots & Wings
Finding Wholeness Through Benedictine & Ignatian Wisdom

Women Companions in Spirituality are hosting an afternoon for Catholic women seeking to explore the connection between mental

wellbeing and spiritual practice.

Both Benedictine and Ignatian traditions offer complementary gifts for mental health.

Roots – Benedictine Spirituality

Wings – Ignatian Spirituality

Stability, rhythm, community, ora et labora (prayer and work)

Speaks to the nervous system’s need for safety, routine, and belonging.

Discernment, freedom, “finding God in all things.”

Speaks to the soul’s need for self-awareness, emotional honesty, and movement toward wholeness.

You cannot fly without roots, and roots that never grow wings become stagnant.

Mental health and spiritual health both need grounded-ness and the freedom to notice, name, and move through what we feel.

  • Suzy Russell: a passionate mental health clinical nurse consultant (CNC) working with the NSW police force. Suzy has over 40 years of specialised nursing experience, comprising of emergency, community and hospital psychiatry.
  • Sister Jan Barnett RSJ: a member of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, she follows in the footsteps of Saint Mary MacKillop. Sr Jan has been involved in various initiatives focusing on refugee rights, environmental concerns, and Indigenous reconciliation.
