In Dialogue with Gravity - CI workshop with Genki Matsuyama

Location
About
In Dialogue with Gravity is a one-day Contact Improvisation workshop focused on physical technique, pathways and principles. The “dialogue” here is not only between two dancers. It begins internally by learning how to listen and respond through our own bodies, before entering into dialogue with another.
We begin by exploring our relationship with our own body, the floor and the space around us through floorwork, falling, catching our weight, coordination and pathways between the floor and standing. From there, we move into relationship with a partner, exploring weight sharing, points of contact, support and how these principles can develop into a shared dance.
The workshop is beginner-friendly and open to all levels, including experienced practitioners who want to deepen their physical understanding of Contact Improvisation. By developing a vocabulary of pathways and greater awareness of internal and external organisation, participants can build confidence, safety and freedom when entering jams and open improvisation.
Schedule
10:00am–12:00pm — Morning Session
12:00–1:30pm — Lunch Break
1:30–5:00pm — Afternoon Session
5:00–6:00pm — Rest & Hangout
The studio will remain open until 6:00pm, so you’re welcome to stay, rest, chat, or simply take some time to wind down after the workshop.
Genki Matsuyama brings over 20 years of dance experience, including more than 8 years of Contact Improvisation, with a strong background in contemporary and street dance informing his physical and technical approach to CI. He has trained CI extensively in Australia, Switzerland, Germany and Japan.
