About

Most project controls careers are built on the contractor side — but the owner's side of the table works differently, and starts much earlier. Within a CAPEX portfolio, controls is involved long before a contractor mobilises: shaping early estimates and schedules during concept select, reviewing quotations, and testing annual funding against the portfolio.

This session follows a capital project through its full lifecycle from the owner's chair — how estimates and schedules mature into an approved budget and baseline at FID, how cost and schedule performance is tracked and forecast through execution, how each project's dates and costs feed master schedules and corporate-level reporting, and how a project is properly closed out: capitalisation, final metrics, and lessons that feed the next estimate.

Drawing on generalised examples from oil and gas and mining capital projects, this is a practical, mechanics-first look at what owner-side project controls actually does — across the whole life of a project.
