BOOK LAUNCH
The John Curtin Research Centre invites you to the launch of Iron Law No More: The Rise and Demise of the Catholic-Labor Alliance in Australia by Jeff Kildea.
The book will be launched by Senator Don Farrell, with JCRC Chairperson Sam Almaliki as MC.
It was once an iron law of Australian politics that a Catholic seeking a career in public life would find it in the Labor Party. Iron Law No More traces how that alliance formed in the early twentieth century, how it produced Labor governments in the 1940s in which Catholics made up more than half of caucus and cabinet, and why it came apart in the final quarter of the century.
Jeff Kildea is an Honorary Professor in Irish Studies at the University of New South Wales.
When: Thursday 22 October 2026, 5.30pm for a 6pm start
Where: Upstairs at Il Gambero, 166 Lygon Street, Carlton VIC
RSVP essential.
