About
The American Dance Therapy Association conference in November 2026 features the following question:
Participants will consider the role of AI and technology in therapeutic practice, emerging research, innovative clinical approaches, and the possibilities that arise when ancestral rhythms meet contemporary tools.
Alex Jordan (DTAA Professional Member based in Australia's Northern Territory) is attending the ADTA conference to present a workshop alongside friend and colleague Sylvia Nulpinditj focussing on the Ancient intelligence carried through Yolngu dance and culture. She will also sit on the international panel to discuss the wider topic around technology and AI, joined by Hung Jsu Wan (NZ and Taiwan).
In this on-line chat, Alex will present some background research and invites Australasian DMTs to join a preliminary discussion around how you are using or ignoring digital technologies, or alternately, the impacts you are facing in your work and practices. I’d love to hear about any innovations in this area within the DTAA as well as concerns and issues in order to bring a broader regional perspective to the international panel.
This conversation will be followed up with a presentation on return from the conference.
Here are some questions for reflection on the topic:
● With the changing environment around us - accelerating and digitalizing - how are we staying true to our essence as dance/movement therapists, sustaining the dance in our work and maintaining a humanistic approach?
● How has your professional practice changed, is changing, or perhaps not changing at all, in service of flexibility and adaptability for digital advancements?
● How can we bridge the two sides of technology as both disruptor and ally in dance/movement therapeutic practice?
● How is digital technology impacting our bodies and our movement? How do we stay grounded and embodied in an accelerating world?
