Me & My Violin: First Steps
Hosted by
About
An introduction to violin and classical music for little people (and their grown-ups!)
This isn't your typical preschool music class. Inspired by the rhyming children's picture book 'Me & My Violin' by Jane Cormack (the host of the class), this playful 8-week program gives little ones their very first steps towards playing a string instrument, and fosters a love of classical music along the way.
Each 40-minute session follows a familiar rhythm. We begin with a bow and a welcome song, then read from 'Me & My Violin'. Next come games and activities that build real violin skills: standing tall, holding a bow and waking up busy fingers. We finish by listening to a new classical music piece and letting our imaginations lead the dancing. Is it pirates? Fairies? Busy bees?
No violin needed. The 'First Steps' program is all about getting ready to play, and all equipment is provided. Children earn a sticker each week towards a musical prize, and finish the term with a head start for formal lessons or a follow-on group learning program.
The sessions are designed for children aged 4 and 5, but younger and older children are welcome too. Every child develops at their own pace, so please get in touch if you'd like to chat about whether the class suits your child.

About the teacher:
Jane Cormack, a Petersham local and mum of two, has been playing violin since she herself was four, and she's never happier than when she's surrounded by kids: connecting, celebrating and helping them learn. Her teaching is shaped by a simple belief: children learn best through play and structure. Games, stories and imagination draw children in. Routine, repetition and clear foundations help them grow. Getting the balance right is what turns a first lesson into a lifelong love of music.
Jane wrote the 'Me & My Violin' book and this program to give families a companion for those early days of practice: a story children want to return to, and phrases and activities that parents can echo in the practice room.
A violinist and teacher, Jane holds an A.Mus.A and has been teaching children since she was 16. She now conducts local school music ensembles and runs early-years violin workshops. In her own youth, her violin took her around Australia and overseas, to Spain, London and Malaysia, and even onto the stage of the Sydney Opera House. It's an experience she hopes to open up for the next generation of young musicians.
