Writing for well-being creative writing workshops

About
Thursdays, 5, 12, 19 & 26 November 1:00–3:00pm Roto House, Port Macquarie $240 per young person for all four workshops
A gentle four-week creative writing journey for young people aged 12–16, inviting them to slow down, explore their inner and outer worlds, and discover a meaningful relationship with writing.
Across four Thursday afternoons, we’ll explore writing through imagination, nature, sensory experiences, reflection and personal experience.
These workshops are designed as a connected four-week journey, so participants are asked to commit to all four sessions. Each workshop builds on the previous one, allowing the group to become familiar with one another and creating space for deeper exploration over time.
No previous creative writing experience is needed. There is no pressure to produce “perfect” writing. The focus is on curiosity, self-expression, imagination and discovering your own voice.
5 November — Starting with Light
We begin with light — exploring joy, curiosity, wonder and possibility.
Through creative writing, sensory experiences and imagination, we’ll explore what brings us alive, what we care about, what makes us curious and what we would like to grow in our lives.
12 November — Meeting the Shadow
We gently turn towards the parts of life that can feel difficult — uncertainty, worries, challenges and emotions that are not always easy to express.
Through writing, metaphor and imagination, participants will have an opportunity to explore their inner worlds in a safe and supportive space.
There is no requirement to share anything personal. Each person has the freedom to choose what they write about and what they would like to share.
19 November — Seeing with New Eyes
What happens when we look at something familiar in a completely different way?
Through our senses, imagination and connection with nature, we’ll slow down, notice closely and experiment with different perspectives.
This workshop invites participants to discover how changing the way we look can open up new possibilities — both in writing and in life.
26 November — Going Forward: Bringing Our Gifts Forward
Our final workshop looks towards the future and the gifts each young person already carries.
What am I good at? What matters to me? What am I curious about? What can I offer the world?
Through creative writing and reflection, we’ll explore strengths, creativity, courage, kindness, imagination and each person’s unique way of seeing the world.
We’ll bring together some of what we have discovered throughout the four weeks and consider what we would like to carry forward.
About the facilitator
I’m Alice, a writer and writing workshop facilitator. Writing has been part of my life since childhood, beginning with writing down my dreams when I was 11. Over the past two years, I’ve been creating community writing projects that bring people together through words, nature and creative expression.
I’m passionate about helping young people discover that writing can be much more than something they do for school. Writing can be a way to make sense of experiences, express feelings and ideas, explore imagination, notice the world and develop a deeper relationship with their own voice.
