Stephen Robertson, cinephile and loyal supporter of the sessions, will introduce the classic.

“Winner of 4 Oscars, the legendary director, John Ford, produced hugely influential films across the silent and sound eras. From 1917 to 1970, he directed 130 films.

The classic World War 1 epic depicts a family torn apart by the advent of the war. Australian born Ida Alexa Wylie, an early suffragette, wrote the story on which the film is based. Melbourne born prolific actor, Frank Baker, Snowy’s brother, in a minor role, is another Australian contribution.

This profoundly moving film with its atmospheric cinematography and deeply emotional portrait of a mother’s challenges and grief in wartime and beyond resonated with audiences worldwide and continues to do so today.

The influence of Murnau and Sunrise (1927) is strongly evident in this feature. Ford’s stellar achievement presents the grim nature of war and its aftermath revealing the passing of a genteel older world and the violent birth of a new, the 20th Century!”
