Advanced Neurodivergence in AOD Practice – Online

About

Build workable treatment plans when neurodivergence and alcohol and other drug use overlap

Recognising neurodivergence is only the beginning. In practice, alcohol and other drug use, mental health issues, executive functioning, sensory needs and communication differences can overlap, making it difficult to work out what is getting in the way of treatment and how best to respond.

This one day advanced neurodivergence workshop builds your ability to formulate complex presentations and make thoughtful treatment adaptations without stepping into diagnosis.

Through complex case examples, structured case formulation, treatment planning and skills practice, you will use practical frameworks to examine how a person learns, remembers, regulates, communicates and follows through, then adapt alcohol and other drug interventions around their strengths, needs and capacity.

Need more foundational skills in responding to neurodivergence? Check out our Neurodivergence in AOD Practice workshop.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to
  • Assess how neurodivergent traits, mental health issues and alcohol and other drug use interact to affect treatment engagement and follow through
  • Develop a working formulation that translates strengths, masked needs and functional difficulties into clear treatment priorities
  • Adapt treatment for executive functioning difficulties affecting attention, memory, planning, task initiation and follow through
  • Modify communication, psychoeducation and treatment tasks to make them more concrete, structured, predictable and accessible
  • Respond when standard goals, homework or behaviour change strategies repeatedly fail to translate into action
  • Build practical treatment plans that use strengths, interests, visual supports, repetition and appropriate support from others
Who should attend

Alcohol and other drug practitioners, counsellors and other health and community service workers who already understand the foundations of neurodivergence and want greater confidence adapting treatment for more complex presentations. Previous participation in Neurodivergence in AOD Practice or equivalent foundational neurodivergence training is recommended.
