About

Imagine yourself stepping inside a reverberant Italian basilica back in the year 1610 and to experience one of the most extraordinary works of sacred music history: Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine.

In the Vespers the composer bridges two entirely different musical worlds. With one foot, Monteverdi stands in the Renaissance, using traditional Gregorian chant and intricate, sacred polyphony. With the other foot, he leaps boldly into the Baroque, introducing the theatrical drama, sensuality, and virtuosity of early opera.

Vox Caldera under direction of Nicholas Routley bring this breathtaking work to life in our time and in our local setting at St Mary’s Ballina.
