50th Anniversary Mudbrick Tour & Workshop

Sunday 8 November 2026 | 10.00 am–4.00 pm

Departing from St Andrews Primary School

Curious about what it’s like to live in a mudbrick home?

Join the Nillumbik Mudbrick Association for the 50th Anniversary Mudbrick Tour & Workshop—a celebration of Nillumbik’s rich mudbrick heritage and the return of a much-loved local tradition.

This year’s tour features five distinctive mudbrick homes: three in St Andrews, one in Cottles Bridge and one in Panton Hill. Step inside a carefully curated cross-section of homes and meet the people who live in them. Homeowners will share their personal experiences of building, buying, retrofitting, maintaining and enjoying life in a Nillumbik mudbrick home.

Whether you’re considering building, buying or selling a “muddie”; inspired by bush-modern architecture; interested in sustainable design; or simply curious to look inside these remarkable homes, the tour offers a rare opportunity to experience the warmth, character and craftsmanship of mudbrick living firsthand.

Mudbrick Workshop, Food and Refreshments

At St Andrews Primary School, Nillumbik Mudbrick Association volunteers will demonstrate the tools and techniques used to make mudbricks, with an opportunity for visitors to get their hands dirty and try it for themselves.

A sausage sizzle and coffee van will also be available at the school.

Tour Departures and Transport

Tour departures will commence from St Andrews Primary School every 30 minutes between 10.00 am and 1.30 pm. Each departure time is limited to 33 visitors across three shuttle buses.

When booking, please select your preferred departure time and arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand to allow for check-in, bus allocation and boarding.

Please note: the 30-minute session shown when booking is your allocated starting time only—it is not the duration of the tour. We recommend allowing approximately 2.5 hours to visit all five homes and take part in the workshop. The final 1.30 pm departure allows 2.5 hours before the event concludes at 4.00 pm.

The tour operates in two legs, with visitors returning to St Andrews Primary School between them. Shuttle buses will circulate between the school and the featured homes, allowing visitors to hop on and off at each stop before continuing along the route.

Parking is available at St Andrews Primary School. For the safety and privacy of our hosts, visitors must use the shuttle buses; self-driving between properties is not permitted.

Accessibility, Footwear and Families

Please be aware that the homes featured on the tour are private residences and are not designed as public venues. Properties may include stairs, steps, narrow accessways, uneven or sloping ground and dams. Some areas may be difficult to access with prams, wheelchairs or mobility aids.

Visitors should wear sturdy, enclosed footwear suitable for walking on uneven surfaces. If you have particular accessibility requirements, please contact the Nillumbik Mudbrick Association before booking so we can provide further information.

Children are welcome; however, due to the bus travel, length of the tour, varied terrain and fragile or valuable items within the homes, the event may not be suitable for babies or young children. Parents and carers are encouraged to consider whether the tour will be appropriate for their child before booking.

All children attending must remain under the close supervision of a parent or carer at all times. Please follow directions from homeowners and volunteers, remain within designated visitor areas and take care around the properties.

Thank you for helping us respect our generous hosts and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Hop aboard. Explore. Discover. Be inspired.

Proudly presented by the Nillumbik Mudbrick Association, with generous support from Bendigo Bank Eltham and Nillumbik Shire Council.
