Bow, Reed & Hammer - Magnificent Mozart and 20th Century Brilliance

Sunday March 21, 2021 at 6.30pm AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Time)

Yi Wang (violin), Justin Beere (clarinet) and Darryl Coote (piano)

While the majority of Mozart’s works involving piano are set in major keys and display his customary lyricism, the works he composed in minor keys are even more striking. So it’s well-appropriate that Yi Wang, principal first violin of Orchestra Victoria and Team of Pianists partner Darryl Coote, open the Team’s 2021 season with Mozart’s dramatically expressive two-movement Sonata for Violin and Piano in E minor KV 304. The duo will dazzle us with their performance of Tzigane, Ravel's gypsy-inspired and fiendishly difficult tour de force. Justin Beere, Associate principal clarinet of Orchestra Victoria, accompanied by Darryl Coote, will share with us Saint-Saëns’ substantial Clarinet Sonata, set in four movements and encompassing a wide range of expressive and technical challenges. All three performers combine to perform two exciting twentieth-century chamber works for the somewhat unusual combination of violin, clarinet and piano: Milhaud’s humorous Trio and Khatchaturian’s Trio, a work exploring bi-tonality yet still intensely lyrical.

Mozart - Sonata for violin & piano in E minor KV 304
Saint-Säens - Clarinet Sonata Op 167
Milhaud - Trio for clarinet, violin & piano Op 157b
Ravel - Tzigane for violin & piano
Khatchaturian - Trio for clarinet, violin & piano
