About

A new State Opera of South Australia production
in collaboration with Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide.
One of the greatest opera love stories ever written.
Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, 'Dido & Aeneas' tells the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and her fateful love for Trojan war hero Aeneas. Their passionate story is chronicled through some of the most exquisite music ever written.

One of the earliest known English language operas, Purcell’s opera receives a contemporary retelling by Director Nicholas Cannon.

Conducted by Luke Dollman, the cast includes an exciting array of young Australian opera talent: soprano Bethany Hill as Dido, Victorian baritone Raphael Wong as Aeneas and soprano Kate Macfarlane as Belinda. renowned mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Campbell appears as The Sorceress. Young artists of the Elder Conservatorium of Music appear in supporting roles, chorus and orchestra.

ABOUT THE VENUE
The former Clipsal factory on the outskirts of the Adelaide CBD, now known as Plant 4 Bowden is the setting for this exciting new production.
Set in the round, audience members can arrive early for a pre-show dining experience upstairs with a wide variety of gourmet eateries and Plant 4's main bar. Then, 30 minutes before the performance, patrons are encouraged to take drinks and nibbles to their table - enjoy a variety of local beers, wines, gins along with a cheese or dessert platter with a central stage to watch the opera unfold around them.
The beautiful exposed interiors and sense of history peeling from the walls make Plant 4 a unique location for this Opera event.
