The Centre for Food & Allergy Research (CFAR) is a Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). CFAR is a collaboration of Australia’s leading experts in children’s food allergy and food-related immune disorders. Together, we undertake high-quality research into the prevention and management of food allergy, and provide evidence-based contributions to policy development.
Our goals are to prevent future cases of food allergy, to cure existing food allergies, and to ensure that every child with food allergies can eat food safely.
Please join us for one or both days of CFAR’s 2018 Strategic Retreat.
Both days are free and open to the public, however places are limited and registration is required.

Thursday 10 May (8:30 am – 5:00 pm) - CFAR Research Update & Strategic Planning Day
The morning will consist of a series of short technical presentations showcasing the latest developments in Australian food allergy research. The afternoon will include facilitated panel discussions on clinically important paradigms for the prevention and management of food allergy.
Friday 11 May (9:00 am – 5:00 pm) - CFAR Round Table Discussion “Food allergy cures – are we ready for prime time?”
There are many novel therapies in development as researchers work to find a cure for food allergy. As with any medical intervention, it is important for both patients and clinicians to consider the following questions: Will it work? Is it safe? What are the unknowns?
We will discuss the important issues of efficacy, safety and accessibility from the consumer, clinician and researcher point of view. The desired outcomes for the day include:
• Help Australia to understand the global context in this rapidly changing field
• Help to inform the ASCIA guidelines currently in development on OIT for food allergy
• Discuss the need for minimum standards for informed consent and safety where OIT is being practiced
• Inform the research agenda for food allergy cures
• Provide knowledge sharing between all of the stakeholders
We will spend the morning reviewing the current evidence base for food allergy cures, including trials in progress, guidelines (or progress towards) and current practice in the US, UK, and Australia, and the afternoon will involve panel discussions facilitated by Dr Norman Swan.
Admission to Friday’s Round Table Discussion will be strictly limited to registered attendees.
