About

SUSTAINABLE BASKETRY WORKSHOP  | WILD FIBRES BASKETRY

Sydney Craft Week is an inspirational festival that speaks to our fundamental human urge to create, while also showcasing exceptional contemporary craft. Mindful Making is the theme for Sydney Craft Week 2018. Mindful Making explores how working with your hands offers opportunities to focus, connect, relax and create.

This Sustainable Basketry workshop, as part of Sydney Craft Week, will show you how to be creative with your sustainability practices by combining traditional coil weaving with repurposed plastic bags and yarn.

Basket weaving is an age old tradition spanning many generations and cultures. Weaving baskets is a creative, calming, social and addictive craft. We’ll be incorporating traditional coil weaving practices with modern and sustainable materials to create our own unique woven pieces.

This sustainable coil weaving workshop is ideal for basketry beginners, and people wanting to learn and new craft or mindfulness practice. You will learn all the skills necessary to weave your very own basket using an array of colourful yarn and re-purposed plastic bags. Following the workshop you can use these skills to weave any number of woven forms such as sculptures, homewares, jewellery or of course baskets. You’ll also go home with a Wild Fibres pack to help you maintain your new weaving addiction which includes a step by step guide to coil weaving, a fibre directory and a chenille needle.

Please bring with you two plastic grocery bags from any local supermarket (eg. IGA, Foodworks). All other materials are provided.

Sat Oct 6th  |  11am - 3pm
$120.00 - includes all materials.
