Classical Sundays @ Newtown #1 - Nick Russoniello

An infectious saxophone craze swept across post war U.S.A. The bubbling optimism of the time combined with the effect of virtuosi such as Rudy Wiedoeft sparked a mania; everyone wanted to play the sax. It was this era that transformed the image of the sax from novelty gimmick to king of cool. 

Join award-winning saxophonist Nicholas Russoniello and the Golden Age Quartet as they rekindle the sound spectrum of George Gershwin, Charlie Chaplin and Erwin Schulhoff with gut strings and an original 1920s C melody saxophone.

The Musicians
Saxophone virtuoso Mr. Nicholas Russoniello holds claim to several major awards including the ABC
Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and the Fine Music Kruger Scholarship. Mr.
Russoniello has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide, Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney
Symphony Orchestras and as a guest performer with the Acacia Quartet, Omega Ensemble, Australian
Opera Ballet Orchestra and the Australian World Orchestra. A rising composer, Mr. Russoniello’s
compositions are now performed regularly across the country as well as abroad, and his very fine
performances can be heard on ABC Classic FM and Fine Music 102.5.

The charming first violinist in the Golden Age Quartet, Miss Julia Russoniello hails from Sydney’s
lower north shore. A recent Master’s graduate, Miss Russoniello is a keen researcher and performer
of historical styles. Beyond Dickson Street Space Miss Russoniello can be heard playing with The
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, Salut! Baroque,
Bach Akademie Australia, Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra and has been recorded for live broadcast
for ABC Classic FM and Fine Music 102.5.

All who appreciate fine violin playing welcome the reappearance of Miss Meg Cohen in our midst
after the recent months she has spent studying and performing at the Australian National Academy of
Music in Melbourne. Well-versed in modern and historical playing styles, Miss Cohen is the founder
and director of the Sydney Baroque Music Festival and performs with many ensembles including the
Sydney Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia, the Australian Youth Orchestra, Bach Akademie Australia, and
the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra.

A true virtuoso of the historical viola, Miss Tara Hashambhoy studied at the Sydney Conservatorium
of Music under Nicole Forsyth, specialising in historical performance. Miss Hashambhoy has
performed with numerous eminent Australian ensembles including Australian Brandenburg
Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera, Salut! Baroque, Sydney Consort and Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra.  Miss
Hashambhoy is a record and theatre enthusiast, taking great pride in her recordings of works by
Australian composer Ann Carr-Boyd with ensemble Thoroughbass and her project-of-love: The Pearl
and Dagger Company which blends musical performance and theatre.

Miss Caroline Hobbs, a cellist of supreme distinction, holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from
Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Abroad, Miss Hobbs undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Music
Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Nicholas Jones. There in
England she auditioned for the class of Gregor Horsch, principal cellist of the Concertgebouw
Orchestra (the Netherlands), and as a result relocated to Germany to study with him and to attend
the Orchester-Zentrum NRW. While living in Europe Miss Hobbs regularly gave performances in
prestigious venues such as Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Hermitage in Russia and the
Konzerthaus in Berlin.
