Adelaide German Week '24 - Hahndorf Historie Tag

Join us for a leisurely Saturday afternoon in Hahndorf and learn about the history of its German settlers. The team from Hahndorf Walking Tours will take participants along the streets of Hahndorf and explore the rich German history and stories of the past of the streets and buildings. This walking tour is limited to 20 persons, so be quick. Following the one-hour walking tour, participants will gather at the Wolf Blass Museum and Wine Bar for refreshments and hear from Dr. Ingrid Muenstermann about personal stories of German migrants to Australia. Ticket fees include fingerfood and one free drink.

This entertaining and interactive seminar to be held by Frauke Guenther and Samuel Doering at Adelaide's German Academy is set to explore different aspects of what GERMAN actually is! Starting with German as a LANGUAGE and looking at the close relationship with its English cousin including mutual import words and 'Denglisch', the evening will soon move on to the ever-intriguing field of perceptions of Germany and the Germans, thereby exploring the good as well as the bad of German STEREOTYPES. After an interval with German 'Brezeln' and German beverages, the focus will shift to what’s GERMAN IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Discover our German heritage and its lasting impact in this engaging presentation, which will take you through the history, culture and vibrant traditions shaping our state today! As this special evening will be held partly in German and partly in English, it is recommended for German speakers with a minimum of around 2 years of guided language study.

Adelaide German Week '24: Science, Business & Innovation Day

The annual Adelaide German Week Science, Business, and Innovation Day returns in 2024, co-hosted by The University of Adelaide and Flinders University. Join us at the Australian Space Discovery Centre (ASDC) for an evening that celebrates and commemorates the rich history and breadth of partnerships between South Australia and Germany across the science, industry, research and business landscape. The program will feature a showcase from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space (P4S). You will then have an opportunity to connect with staff from the University of Adelaide, Flinders University, P4S, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Chamber of Commerce of South Australia (GBCSA) at a tradeshow-style networking session, supported by the Australia-Germany Research Network (AGRN) and the DAAD. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome. Entry is free; registration is essential to secure your ticket as places are limited.

Following the fall of the Iron Curtain and the dissolution of Soviet control of Poland in the early 1990s, New York-based music journalist Ruth (Lena Dunham) and her Polish father Edek (Stephen Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, set out on a tour of his homeland. Having left Poland and the past behind, Edek is reluctant to engage with Ruth’s quest and his own trauma. So, he follows his own amusing agenda, undermining their trip with his unpredictable and eccentric demeanour, until the two visit the family’s former home and meet the current occupants. Dr. Waasner has been the president of the Industrie und Handelskammer (IHK) Oberfranken since May 2022, and is currently visiting South Australia in a private capacity. With a keen interest in industry and commerce Dr. Waasner is eager to meet with locally operating German businesses and discuss the the economic landscape in South Australia. The IHK Oberfranken is one of Germany's 79 Chambers of Commerce, representing some 51 000 businesses from their region. Pop-up Event: Strandtag & Picknick Dinner

Es wird heiss!! Join us for a spontaneous arvo at the beach to find some relief from the heat! We'll bring along a large marquee for sun protection, which we will pitch up from 4 - 6:30pm. Please bring along everything else, e.g. beach wear, toys for the kids, boards, blankets or chairs to sit on, food and drinks. We will be on the beach just west of the Henley Sailing Club, West Beach. As the location is right outside the adjacent Dry Zone you are welcome to bring alcoholic drinks along. Registration via trybooking is not mandatory, but helps us with planning, hence greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any changes at short notice we can advise you via WhatsApp, if you have registered. Look out for the "Adelaide German Week" branded marquee on the beach. Picknick dinner at the end of the arvo. Bring all your own picknick needs.

Adelaide German Week '23 - Familientag am Meer

Families and friends of South Australia's German and multicultural communities are invited to join us for an "entspannter Nachmittag" at the Glenelg Surf Life Club (GSLC). There will be craft activities for children and live music by Luke Thompson and Lee Pfitzner. Der Heilige Sankt Nikolaus will make an appearance with his helpers and hand out presents to families. Your ticket fee includes a free drink (alcoholic standard drink or non-alcoholic beverages). The GSLC will be selling food and drinks throughout the afternoon. At the conclusion of the activities at the GSLC at 3pm we invite families to join us at our marquee at the beach afterwards. Please bring your own beach equipment, food & drinks, games, etc, if you want to stay for that part of the afternoon. Please note that parents/guardians will be responsible for their children at all times.

Adelaide German Week: Oktoberfest

Put your Lederhose und Dirndl on, and join us at the Prancing Pony Oktoberfest. Hosted at the brewshed by Corinna and Frank, the family friendly day will be a celebration of traditional Bavarian culture. There will be a full spread of German fare from beer and food to costumes and entertainment. The day will feature challenges including stein holding and pretzel eating as well as Schuhplattler performances and whipcracking lessons. Adelaide German Week is joining with the Prancing Pony's Oktoberfest celebrations. For the period of 5-8pm we are getting a group of people together, when "Feierabend" will be playing modern hits with a brass-pop-oompah twist and Bavarian Oktoberfest music. Adelaide German Week: Henschke @ Barossa history experience

The famous Barossa wines owe a great deal to the early German settlers who arrived in 1830s and 1840s. The Henschke family is one of the well-known wine making families with German heritage. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke is a direct descendant of Johann Christian Henschke, founder of Henschke, who settled in the Barossa after departing his village of Kutschlau in Prussia. Join Stephen, Prue and members of the local community as they host a history walk at Gnadenberg Church and cemetery, Hill of Grace vineyard and German School in historic Parrot Hill village. Adelaide German Week: Kinoabend (German Movie Night)

Join us for a German movie night to watch 'Ich bin dein Mensch/I'm your man'. (Rating: M) A charming and intelligent comedy, directed by Maria Schrader and featuring Maren Eggert and Dan Stevens (familiar from the series Downton Abbey). This film is a playful romance with a witty, moving look at human relationships. Recently separated forty-something Alma is a research scientist at Berlin’s magnificent Pergamon Museum, and entirely dedicated to her work. Needing research funds, she’s persuaded by her supervisor to participate in an extraordinary study: for three weeks she must live with a human-like robot designed solely to be her ideal companion. Professor Ghil'ad Zuckermann, D.Phil. (Oxford), Chair of Linguistics & Endangered Languages at the University of Adelaide, will take you on an entertaining exploration of 'the wonders, peculiarities, emergence, history and spread of the Yiddish (Judeo-German) language, the differences between Yiddish and German, the endangerment of Yiddish, and the survival of Yiddish beneath 'Revived Hebrew.'
