Learn to create a unique handmade journal in this bookbinding workshop in Brisbane, where you'll master the art of using two different bookbinding techniques.
In this class, you will learn the ancient art of Coptic bind stitch and the decorative French link stitch and how these binds are used together to create one journal.
These books lay flat when open so it's perfect for sketchbooks, journals, scrapbooks, watercolouring, art journals, daily diaries and much more.
I will guide you through the 2.5 to 3-hour session, providing all necessary materials and tools, so you can focus on unleashing your creativity.
We will be using plain 110gsm papers for the insides. You can choose between landscape and portrait. If you have special paper you would like to use (ie. Your favourite watercolour paper) please contact me in advance for measurements.
By the end of the class, you'll leave with a beautiful handmade journal that showcases your newfound skills in bookbinding.

In this workshop you will create multiple junk journals using recycled boxes such as cereal, soup, museli boxes etc.
You will create the journals from scratch, learning how to cut the box, covering it, choosing inside pages and binding it together. Lots of papers and "junk" to craft with!
You will also learn how to create your own unique stitches using simple designs or even words.
This workshop is designed to be a lot of fun, showing you how to create a journal from things you have around the home!
Lots of papers to choose from but if you have any personal papers you would like to include then feel free to bring them along with you.
You will get to make multiple books and learn different ways to bind them.

We will then spend some time talking about Vision Boards and brainstorm ideas for your own page. Lots of magazines, stickers, washi tape and other craft items to use!

You will learn how to make a template, create signatures and bind the pages to create a decorative A6 sized journal.

You will then learn how to use the same template to modify the bind to create different patterns.

In this Valentines inspired classs, you will learn the ancient art of Japanese Stab Bookbinding.
You will create 2 journals using 2 different bookbinding techniques:

We will also create a heart on one notebook using String Art.

Safespace Wellbeing together with Craft2Gifts would love your tweens/teens to join our Gratitude Workshop during the September School Holidays.
Through discussion, activities and sharing of experiences we will explore the concept of gratitude and why it is important for our mental and emotional wellbeing.
The creative section of this workshop will see everyone create a set of affirmation cards and a gratitude journal.
We will learn watercolour techniques and the ancient art of Japanese Bookbinding.
Everyone will leave with
- a better understanding of why gratitude is so important for our mental wellbeing;
- ideas on how to practice gratitude at home, including a handmade journal;
- a set of affirmation cards with personalised messages;
- a practical mindfulness technique; and
- a matching envelope to store all their creations!

These binds were used over 300 years ago in Japan to bind most books during the Edo Period.
Each notebook will have:
- up to 16 pages of high quality 110gsm blank papers
- 8 designs to choose from for the front cover and various colour choices for the back
- book sizes 6x6inch square book

Kids Holiday Bookbinding Workshop - Notebooks

In this creative Bookbinding workshop, the kids will learn the 300+ year old art of Japanese Bookbinding.
Take home:
- a hand sewn notebook with matching envelope and stickers (like the notebooks pictured above made by my 8 and 11 year old sons)
- goodie bag with all the materials needed to make another book at home including instructions!
Each notebook will be uniquely made using the cardstock colours and patterns chosen by your child.
The kids will learn the art of Traditional Japanese Stab Binding Techniques using plastic needles. They will then have the skills to make notebooks at home.
Ideas for the notebooks:
- daily notebook, diary, gratitude journal, sticker book, drawing book..the ideas are endless.
- make as a gift for a friend, family member or your teacher.
This class is for kids 8+.
Parents are welcome to stay for free or drop off and pick up at the end of the class.
