Move over mainstream musicals like Wicked - it’s time for Bubble Boy, Ride The Cyclone, and Jerry Springer The Opera to shine! This month, we want to celebrate some of Broadway’s less known successes. We aren’t defining what isn’t mainstream (that takes the fun of exploring away!) but some good guidelines might be: Off or Off-Off-Broadway, hasn’t won Best Musical, or musicals which you pretend to have heard of when people mention them in conversation because you’re too embarrassed to not know every musical ever.

January Session: Welcome to 2025!

Welcome to Broadway Sessions 2025! We haven’t seen you since November (63 days!) and we couldn’t be more excited to be back celebrating with you for our 10th year of Broadway Sessions! This year starts with our most popular theme, Performer’s Choice. It’s time to wave goodbye to those Christmas carols and start belting out some musical theatre hits – you might even tick off a new year’s resolution in the process. This month includes a performance by cast members of 'The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals'.

t’s our last Session of the year so let’s go out with a bang. What is a Banger you ask? It’s a slang term to describe a song that is catchy and exciting and gets stuck in your head. We think it’s pretty straight forward! Oh, and we have not one, but two guest musicians in our band, so let’s make them earn their keep and keep the songs pumping.

Uh oh! Our usual band has gone missing this month. Thankfully, Kristin Stefanoff has stepped in to save the day. This month, Broadway Sessions is back to basics with a piano-only performer’s choice theme. While we don’t condone the trope of laying on top of the piano in a dimly lit bar, we do encourage performers to bust out their best 11 o’clock number, Jason Robert Brown, or whatever else Kristin can make work with 10 fingers and a can-do attitude. This month also features performances by cast members of HMC's upcoming productions of 'Jekyll & Hyde', NOW Productions 'Half a Sixpence', and AYT's 'Alice in Wonderland'.

August Session: Our 9th Birthday!

Happy birthday, Bobby! Wait, I mean Broadway Sessions, but don’t worry, you’re still in good Company. This month we invite you to join us as we celebrate Broadway Sessions’ 9th birthday! No presents are necessary, but your presence is greatly appreciated for an excellent line up of songs, games and challenges, and, most importantly, dessert. This month also features performances by cast members of ECMT's upcoming productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Alice By Heart, as well as Pelican Productions' Newsies and Heathers.

July Session: Lights, Camera, Broadway!

This month we celebrate songs from the screen and the stage with help from our friends Oscar and Tony. These songs come from an expansive list of shows which have been performed in musical form on both the stage and the screen, such as Cats, Cabaret, Chicago, as well as other shows which don’t start with the letter C. It’s okay if there are some changes between film and stage productions, and you’re invited to sing something from either version, but pro-shots are off limits! It’s time to dig through that old DVD or VCR collection of movie musicals that you should have thrown out years ago. This month also features a performance by cast members of Therry Theatre's upcoming production of Jersey Boys.

October Session: No Humans Allowed

What do Cats, Starlight Express, and Seussical have in common? Bizarre character development? Well, yes, but more importantly… they have no humans! Our No Humans Allowed session is dedicated to all the performers who manipulate their bodies into bizarre shapes to become animals, inanimate objects, and… trains. If you’ve played a fork, a singing piece of paper, a wolf, or a ghost – it’s your time to shine! If you’re stuck for suggestions think… Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Avenue Q, Little Shop of Horrors, Shrek, The Little Mermaid, Bat Boy, Emojiland, Young Frankenstein, Triassic Parq, Frogs, Honk!… so many great song and costume choices! If you'd like to, put a costume together because this session is an (optional) costume session in celebration of Halloween. Grab a pair of scissors, a sewing machine, or an enormous candlestick and turn yourself into a character of your choice – non-human preferred. There’ll be prizes for best dressed so don’t hold back!

July Session: Doomed!

Divorced? No. Beheaded? Sure. Died? Absolutely! This month, we celebrate The Whole “Being Dead” Thing with songs sung by characters who face their untimely demise during the show. To avoid major spoilers, we won’t name characters; however, the following shows include at least one character who dies: Bonnie & Clyde, Hamilton, Beetlejuice, Heathers, Urinetown, Miss Saigon, Spring Awakening, and Les Misérables (you can choose practically any song from this one!). We would love to hear you take our (last) breath away, and there’s bonus points for the best death on stage. Please note: no performers were harmed in the making of this Session.

We’re bringing Company… and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, West Side Story, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, Gypsy, Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the… do we need to go on? There’s a lot to choose from, so help us to make guest pianist Martin Cheney regret agreeing to play these wonderful scores.

April Session: Oh, What A Beautiful Session!

Tonight we celebrate one of My Favourite Things: the Golden Age. Starting in 1943 with the opening of Oklahoma! by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Golden Age musicals were the first to fully integrate music and dance to advance the plot. While the Golden Age officially ended in 1959, there are several shows in the early 60s which are often included in the list, with Fiddler on the Roof regarded as the last Golden Age musical. With the range of 1943 to 1964, you are spoilt for choice of great Golden Age shows, including: My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Oklahoma!, Singin’ In the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis, Gypsy, West Side Story, Carousel and more! Wouldn’t It Be Loverly to join us for a nostalgic night of great performances?

Different venue, different food options, different bar, but the same quality night of story telling you've grown accustomed to over the last seven years. October Session: Antagonists Unite!

ANTAGONISTS! These characters directly oppose the protagonist and cause conflict throughout the story. Often they are the villain of the story; however, not all antagonists are villains! Javert’s opposition to Jean Valjean was from a place of stubborn righteousness, not evil motives (unlike the evil decision to cast Russell Crowe…). With characters such as Beetlejuice, Macavity, Trunchbull, J.D., Scar, Regina George, the Mad Hatter and all the rest, there’s nothing anticlimactic about the repertoire on offer! Join us while we sing out the anthems of theatre’s antithetical foes and celebrate their antics. From the antiquated tunes of old to the anthologies of contemporary musicals, join us to celebrate the antics of our favourite antagonists. This month's Session also includes promos from Marie Clark's upcoming production of "I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change", and ECMT's production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee".

SEVEN! We.Are.Seven! What's so special about seven you ask? Many consider it to be a lucky number and it the basis for many myths and folklore. There are the Seven Wonders of the World. The seven dwarfs. Seven days in a week. Seven colors in the rainbow. There are seven swans a-swimming. Seven letters in the a musical alphabet. Seven deadly sins. The list goes on. Also, seven is considered by some to be the most 'prime' number within the first 10 numbers as you cannot multiply it within the group, making it a kind of optimal-prime (not to be confused with Optimus Prime, of course...)

This month we are joined by the incredible pianist Daniel Brunner, who will be taking over the stage in solo-piano style. The band is on temporary hiatus and Dan will be running the show from the keys, so we encourage performers to select songs that are more appropriate for just a piano (rather than the full band). Dan is a fabulous jazz pianist (amongst other things, of course) and we're SO excited to have him grace our stage after an extended period living overseas and interstate.
