Basic Chainsaw Training - Cooktown

Want to build your chainsaw skills, improve your confidence and learn how to use a chainsaw safely? Free hands-on chainsaw training is coming to Cooktown and Rossville this September, giving local residents the opportunity to learn practical skills that can be valuable around the home, on properties and when communities are responding to storms and other disasters. Delivered by Pro Saw, the training will cover everything from chainsaw safety and maintenance through to practical manual tree-felling techniques. Basic Chainsaw Training The Basic Chainsaw Training sessions are open to the whole community and are a great opportunity for anyone wanting to develop their skills or gain more confidence using a chainsaw. Sessions will be held: Friday 11 September – Cooktown 8am-3pm The training will include practical instruction in chainsaw safety, maintenance and manual tree felling, with participants working with experienced trainers throughout the day. What's provided? The training is completely free, with participants provided with: Chainsaw and PPE for use during training Morning tea Lunch A nationally accredited training certificate on successful completion Participants will need to bring a water bottle and wear a hat, enclosed shoes and long pants. For safety reasons, loose clothing and jewelery cannot be worn during training. Places are limited and bookings are essential. Assistance provided by the Australian and Queensland governments through the jointly funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. Intermediate Chainsaw Training The Intermediate Chainsaw Training session will focus on developing practical skills for manually felling trees safely and effectively. Box Jelly Theatre Co. are back and excited to present the dynamic four-day drama workshop during the second week of the September school holidays, recommended for school aged children from ages 10 and up! These workshops are brought to you by the Regional Arts Development Fund and Cook Shire Council. Through interactive activities and hands-on experience, young participants will dive into the world of theatre, discovering the joy of self-expression, building confidence, and enhancing teamwork skills. This fun and engaging workshop is the perfect opportunity for children to explore their creativity in a supportive and inspiring environment. Each day from 9am - 3pm at the Cooktown Shire Hall Light refreshments will be provided, BYO lunch and water bottles. $25.00 per child for the full 4 day program! Join us in Cooktown for a free weekend of choir leadership and community singing workshops with experienced choir leader Jane Younghusband. Saturday 22 August 10.00 am–12.00 noon — Choir Leadership Workshop An introductory workshop for people interested in learning practical skills to help lead or conduct a community choir. 1.00 pm–3.30 pm — Returning Choir Participants A singing workshop for people who participated in the Stronger Together workshops and/or Discovery Festival performance. The group already knows the songs and will support and assist the new choir leaders in learning and rehearsing them. Sunday 23 August 10.00 am–12.00 noon — Choir Leadership Workshop A continuation of the leadership and conducting training, including practical opportunities for participants to have a go at leading singers. 1.00 pm–3.30 pm — Full Community Choir An open singing workshop bringing previous choir participants and new singers together. No previous choir experience is required. The choir leadership workshops will cover practical skills such as warming up voices, understanding vocal ranges and parts, teaching songs and harmonies, giving starting notes, maintaining tempo, and leading clear beginnings and endings. Through rhythm, drumming and group activities, participants will build confidence, strengthen social connections and develop teamwork, communication and self-expression skills in a supportive environment. Cook Shire community members are invited to connect through the joy of music as part of Stronger Together — a free community choir program that will bring singers from across the region together for a special combined performance at the Cooktown Discovery Festival in June. Led by choir leaders Jane Younghusband and Merindi Schrieber, the program is designed to build connection, confidence, wellbeing and resilience through a series of fun, relaxed and inclusive local workshops. Participation is easy — simply attend the workshop nearest to you and enjoy singing alongside other community members as you rehearse for the festival performance. No auditions or previous experience are needed! The initiative forms part of ongoing disaster recovery and resilience-building efforts across the region, using music to strengthen social connection, participation, inclusion and community wellbeing across disaster-affected communities. With over 20 years of professional experience and a rich library of nature-based imagery, Colyn shares the key concepts that elevate a single shot and strengthen a cohesive body of work. Expect a blend of foundational and advanced techniques, alongside thoughtful discussions on the photographer’s perspective before the shutter is even pressed. At the heart of the session is a simple idea: your most powerful piece of equipment is your eye. Whether you’re using a phone or a professional rig, the principles explored apply across the board. Kids Shipwrecked Survival Challenge is a great school holiday activity. For kids 8 years and older to get their hands dirty. The sessions from 8th-9th April 2026 is for kids aged 8-12 years old "You've survived a shipwreck and landed on a deserted island. Your boat has drifted and beached itself on the opposite side of the island that has the emergency rescue beacon on it. You need to find this emergency rescue beacon that is a 2 day walk across treacherous terrain . You will have some supplies from the wreckage to help you make it across the island, and you will need to put your survival skills to the test to make it out".
