To mark Dancenorth’s 40th anniversary, 'A Live Moment' is a wildly joyous celebration of dance - unapologetic, inclusive, and deeply communal.
Drawing on four decades of creative legacy, this work invites us to move and be moved, dissolving the boundaries between performer and participant, past and present.
Like a house party spilling through every corner of our home, 'A Live Moment' activates hidden spaces and sparks unexpected connections. It is a mash of archives - stories, bodies, and walls - reimagined and reawakened through rhythm, sensation, and electric togetherness. A moment alive in every sense - unfolding here, now, together.

No Wrong Moves: Seasonal Dance Party

Calling families, friends and fun-loving locals to join Dancenorth as we carve up the floor in celebration of the change of season on the Winter Solstice.
On Friday 27 June from 6pm, we will be opening the doors for a relaxed, family-friendly dance party.
This is a great opportunity to connect, converse and cut a rug with a new crowd.
This is an all-ages event. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Trash Craft Workshops with Damian Meredith

These Trash Craft Workshops invite members of the community of all-ages to get creative with salvaged, pre-loved, and repurposed materials—turning them into odd objects, strange sculptures, and abstract artefacts that will help bring life to TRASHWORLD, a new work by Damian Meredith, presented as part of Tomorrow Makers 7.
These workshops invite participants into an open and experimental art-making process where there’s no right or wrong. It’s all about creativity, collaboration, and having fun along the way.
Each workshop explores a different creative approach—all working toward the creation of the set design for Damian’s work. Participants are welcome to join one, some or all four sessions.

Supporting the future of dance, this annual series empowers the Dancenorth Ensemble to embody the role of choreographer, shaping original works that redefine the possibilities of contemporary dance.
The Under Construction event gives you the chance to meet our Makers and get a taste of what they’re working on.
Through a relaxed discussion, each Maker will share insights into their creative process, the themes and intentions behind their work, and the inspiration that drove its creation.
Questions are warmly welcomed. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Dance classes for wellbeing, resilience and connection. Designed in collaboration with headspace Townsville, these classes are for young people (aged 12 – 25) who have a desire to build their emotional and physical literacy, connect creatively with other people and experience story telling through movement.
These classes are conducted with sensitivity, curiosity and a desire to find joy.

In collaboration with a vibrant group of young dancers from the Townsville Community Learning Centre, Dancenorth presents an original performance inspired by our latest work, Lighting the Dark.
Join us to celebrate diversity, inclusivity and creativity within our community through the transformative power of dance.
This event will be Auslan interpreted. Everyone in the cast and audience will be invited to dance after the performance.

Still is an immersive sonic journey curated by Dancenorth’s Artistic Director Kyle Page. Housed within a stunning architecturally designed space by Liminal Spaces, you and 21 other guests will collectively witness the dawn of a new day while being cradled by the sounds of Canadian composer Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Black Ox Orkestar).

Step behind the scenes with Dancenorth as we prepare to stage an Australian-first for championing inclusivity with our brand new work.
Lighting the Dark is drawn from the rich imagination and deeply compassionate heart of Chris Dyke, a Kaurna (Adelaide) based dancer and choreographer living with Down Syndrome. Joining forces with Dancenorth and some of Australia’s leading creative designers, Chris will be the first-ever artist living with Down Syndrome to direct a full-length work for a mainstream dance company.
Our Under Construction event will give you the chance to peek behind the curtain on this groundbreaking collaboration.
Join us for an open discussion about the project, including:
• Embracing inclusivity, diversity and collaboration in the creative space
• Exploring and honing big ideas to curate something both epic and cohesive
• Navigating health, safety and wellbeing with a hard deadline

Vital Dance Experience - Gentle Seated Dance Class

Part of the global Dance for Parkinson’s program, our Vital Dance classes inspire, support and empower participants to move. The classes take participants through a range of gentle movements and dancers can choose to remain seated should they prefer.
This experience will be co-facilitated by Deeper than Dancing film star Ivor, and include live cello accompaniment by Rike Wolf.

Dance For Absolute Beginners

Dancenorth is delighted to return with Dance For Absolute Beginners, a specially designed class series for people who “can’t dance.” Over six weeks, participants will learn general dance movements, pathways and co-ordinations, guided by experienced teachers in a friendly, supportive environment. Accompanied by great tunes, classes will be relaxed and informative, encouraging safe and efficient movement, social connections and all-round good vibes. By the end of the six weeks, participants will feel stronger and more aware of their bodies, as well as feel more relaxed and confident about finding their own natural groove.
The course is designed as an introductory experience for absolute beginners – no experience or natural skill necessary.

Celebrate International Day of People with Disability 2023 with Dancenorth Australia and Townsville Community Learning Centre.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability and promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance in our community.
Each year, Dancenorth collaborates with a group of students from Townsville Community Learning Centre to create an original dance performance. This year, the group has been inspired by their favourite places.
International Day of People with Disability will be Auslan interpreted and include inclusive participatory dance opportunity for all mobilities.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with diverse abilities and promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance in our community.
The theme for this year’s International Day for People with Disability is ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world.’
Each year, Dancenorth collaborates with a group of students from Townsville Community Learning Centre to create an original dance performance. In 2022 we are excited to also welcome a small ensemble of artists with disability to the stage, who have been working together through November as part of our ‘Deeper than Dancing’ project.

Test Subject is a live dance experiment that employs a computer as the dictator of a dance show. Designed and directed by the award-winning choreographer, sound designer, and software coder, Alisdair Macindoe, the Dancenorth Ensemble will engage in a live dance experiment where they will follow and respond to the outputs of an intelligently designed computer operating system.

A ground-breaking free celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance, music and culture.
Over the past two years, five local First Nations groups – the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts, Big Eye Theatre Dancers, Komet Dancers, Obery Productions, and Bindal Dancers – have come together for the first time in decades to connect, collaborate and co-create a new performance work alongside Dancenorth Australia.

A new work by Dancenorth Australia.
Tens of thousands of years ago, a genetic mutation gave rise to the physical manifestation of red hair in humans. Now, like many, they are endangered.
Air is slowly emptying from a large transparent inflatable structure, ultimately sealing its inhabitants in preserved isolation.
Dancenorth uses the plight of its dancers as an allegory for a contracting world. A world where ecosystems and minorities are increasingly suffocated and silenced.
