Artist Talk: Reclaiming the Muse with Mary Brown (CANCELLED)

Saturday 11 May 2024
Mary Brown conceived the theme for Looked At….And Overlooked for a curated exhibition in Gallery 76 more than two years ago. In this researched-based exhibition, Mary’s artworks pay homage to two remarkable 20th century Surrealist female artists, Leonor Fini and Eileen Agar, and a female designer and architect, Eileen Gray. All three were considered muses to the male artists and designers in their milieu, in histories written by men. Since the Women’s Movement in the 1970s, supportive Art Historians have come to the fore and have reclaimed the muse as an active creator in her own right. Mary will talk about all three female creators in this light. Mary Brown is an accredited tutor and member of the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW. Her background includes lecturing and publishing about textiles and embroidery.
